Change the World?

Mike "Mutt" Rieck

It's hard to miss - in headlines, social media, pop culture, maybe even among your own friends, it feels like being a Christian is becoming less popular and values historically associated with being Christian are under attack. You're probably already thinking of examples and maybe even pondering your best protest tactics and debate points for whatever hits closest to home for you. I'd like to suggest a universal response to all those attacks that come your way as a Christian:

Teach your kids (or kids you know) about your saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Sound too simple? It's not, but we can make it more complicated if that makes you more comfortable. Let's start with you and see how it leads to such a simple approach.

When you hear one of those depressing headlines what's your reaction? "How can God let this happen?"; "The end is near"; "The world is against us."

If we're living according to scriptures like John 16 or 1 Peter 3 our reaction can and should be to take heart, knowing Jesus has already overcome the world and we are living in it so we can share that hope with those who need to know. That reaction can go a long way to influence and support those around us, especially the children in our lives. When we teach children about God's unconditional, unending love for them we prepare them to be thankful for blessings and survive trials.

In this world we will have trouble, but how we react, and teach kids to react is the key. There are plenty of influences teaching kids to fight, to demand their way, to be entitled with no consequences, to define their own sense of right and wrong. It's up to Christians to teach a response of trust and hope, faith and love, and respect for God and His Word.

So really it's not about changing the world. It's about living according to the change God has made in you through His grace, and sharing your faith with your family so they can live that way too.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV https://john.bible/john-16-33

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/1pe.3.15.NIV

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 11:18‭-‬19 NIV https://bible.com/bible/111/deu.11.18-19.NIV
